from floor to ceiling

From the post by Alexia Rossetti on a terrific bench she found, the discussion led to a comment by a reader about chandeliers. To see how one gets to chandeliers from front hall benches, take a look at the comments.

One reader asks how to find an antique chandelier of the right proportions; another reader comments on how to find antiques and vintage furnishings.

Indeed, as nice as some stuff is from the big home furnishings stores, it can all look the same after a certain point. To find things that are both unique and affordable, it's necessary often to go back in time, at least a bit. And sometimes to then put your own creativity to work, with painting, or stenciling, or otherwise sprucing up a piece.

The trick is taking an old piece of what could be called "junk" ...

and making it gorgeous.

Anyone have suggestions on how to find and refurbish great pieces?

To find some old good pieces of furniture, you need to play detective and you have to be resourceful. First find a rich neighborhood. Then find out the days when the residents throw out their furniture - the furniture pick-up days. I have found some gorgeous iron garden chairs this way that just needed reupholstering and since I knew how to do that, I picked them up. Of course it helps if you have a stationwagon or a van.

Another way to find furniture is to take out the penny circulars and circle the ads with yard and garage sales. Again it's better if you pick the better neighborhoods. Another friend of mine picked up baby furniture this way - such as an old crib that just needed repainting.

As for learning how to refurbish furniture, try your local Home Depot. Sometimes they offer classes on refinishing. At least ask one of their experts - sometimes you will find a true expert who can give free advice.

Happy Hunting!
