Indoor fountains come in all sizes and varieties. One of the things most of them have in common is that they are self contained. One they are set up just add distilled water and the water is recirculated, usually from the base where there is a hidden water pump, up the back to the top and down the main section of the fountain creating the waterfall effect.

Distilled water can be bought at the grocery store by the gallon. Once the fountain is full, water can be checked as needed as the water will evaporate off. Distilled water keeps the minerals from tap water from crusting on the fountain surfaces and building up within the pump and stopping it.

It's quite easy to build your own tabletop fountain. You just get a powerhead and a small piece of tubing from an aquarium store, a watertight base, some stones, plug in and fill with water.

Some of the bigger sculptures can also have an auto fill attached, whereby you can tap the building water supply to the fountain reservoir so it self fills.

Irritating noise tends to be minimal noise that breaks a silence so to speak. Like a running faucet or a toilet running. With an indoor fountain the sound cover much more of the sound spectrum so it tends to be a predictable "white noise" like the ocean or a small stream, which can be soothing due to it's predictability.

Commonly Indoor fountains are made of marble, but you can also get these fountains made from other materials such as copper, glass, river stone and natural slate. It ads to the finishing touches of your home and the smoothing sound produced from its running water reduces stress put you into a healthier and more positive state of mind.
