Start Me Up! - Part Two

So you have decided that you want to start your own wedding planning business. Let’s assume for the sake of this post, that you also have decided in which region you would like to offer your services. So now what?!?

Well, hopefully you have done a little bit of research about the area and also a bit of scouting. It’s important to know if there are a lot of planners in the area you hope to practice – too many or not enough? Are there a lot of weddings, venues, vendors, etc.? Not to say that these all have to be located in your specific area, but ideally they are within reach. Now, something interesting in my situation is that I do not live in the area where I will be practicing. In fact, I live a solid hour away. This is by no means a nail in the coffin, though it does mean that it will be quite a bit harder to establish myself amongst the homegrown planners, and even more-so, to break away from the pack…and I assure you where I am going, there is a pack.

So, you have picked your locale, done some recognizance, and hopefully you have decided on a nifty name as well. What is the first, best thing to do in order to begin establishing your business? Day-in and day-out, I find my most valuable marketing tool to be my business card. This is something that can be fairly reasonably priced if you shop around, and is an easy way to demonstrate some semblance of credibility, or at the very least, remind people who you are and what you do. While we are on the subject of business cards, try to think of a way to make your cards stand out. Maybe you want to use a color, a different shape, weight or perhaps rounded corners. Whatever you do, try to make them memorable yet still user friendly. Another great thing about business cards is that they are a great “tool” to include as part of your follow-up. You’ll be meeting with vendors and clients soon enough, don’t be caught unprepared. More on that later…

Here are a few great articles about business cards, their importance and tips on how to make sure your cards are representing your brand and communicating what you want to say.
