It's Furniture. Period.

The Sheffield School just got an interesting question on our Facebook page, about how to use period furniture.

The short answer is, funny you should ask; that's just what we teach in our interior design Course. And in fact, an entire lesson is devoted to it, to you'll come away being able to tell a Louis XV chair from a Hans Wegner table without even looking.

Using period furniture is easy; any Dumpster diver can find a knock-off of an antique and put it in the living room. Using it to good effect, that takes some learning.

Essentially, you want to be sure you don't have periods that clash with each other; you need to decide ahead of time what period you want to evoke, and then go shopping. However, that doesn't mean you can't mix styles; some of the best designs involve mixing it up, and that's part of the joy and excitement of designing a room.

When shopping for furniture, i do suggest customers take some time and do their own homework. Buying online is easy and sometimes the picture of the furniture may not be telling the truth. Visit local furniture store and estimate the pros and cons of buying furniture loally and buying online.

in terms of styles, it is better to consult a sales person as opposed to just imagine it yourself, becuase one the furniture is delivered to your home, it is too troublesome to take it back

Is antique furniture actually that much in demand at present because people really do like it or is there an underlying amount of "antique style snobbery"? - Modern day solid wood furniture can be stylish and when built well with quality kiln dried wood, can last a life time. When it comes to mixing and matching it is easy also with the range of furniture all being available now instead of needing to wait till you fall across your next piece of vintage furniture - but maybe that is the fun and where people get a feeling satisfaction from.....
Anyhooooo just an opinion :)
