My Big Fat Front Hall
Sarah Van Arsdale
Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 10:26AM I’m sick of my front hall. And I know better than to have a lousy front hall. The little I know about Feng Shui includes the idea that the entrance to a home is of utmost importance---another lesson from Feng Shui that also squares with basic design sense and basic good sense.

So. From the front door of the apartment, it’s a long narrow hall, which then opens into a little, um, area. One doorway into the living room, another into the kitchen. By New York City standards this is an enormous luxury.
But it doesn’t work. The bookcase shouldn’t be there at all, and doesn’t really serve a good pupose; the armchair ends up serving as a table for the junk I bring in from outside, and the little telephone table isn’t big enough for one phone, never mind two (one is the “house phone” which serves an intercom for the front door).
I have a recurring dream of making the hall in the style of Chinoiserie. I don’t know where this came from (I used to study Chinese, but that was years ago) but I can’t get it out of my head: some Asian-looking wall paper, a little red lacquer cabinet.
So, in the next couple of weeks I’m going to do what I can with it. And as cheaply as possible.
Here are two more "before" shots. Stay turned for the transformation.
