Elegance, for the public

Serious shoppers know that it takes time, time, and more time to really find something you love - and all that time can definitely lead to a need for a little, er, rest. Almost every store has a restroom for customers, but rarely do you see anything that rises above the mundane. In fact, you are lucky if it is just clean and well-maintained.

After hours of sitting, stretching, lounging, and sitting again whilst shopping for a couch at Room & Board Soho last week, I felt the need to freshen up a bit. Expecting the usual, I was pleasantly surprised by the sleek design of their (extremely clean) restroom.

Dimly lit and appointed with a simple art print and a matching set of chrome accessories, this space  was simple and elegant. What really struck me, however, was the tiny square tile which covered the entire counter, back-splash, floor, and back wall. The tumbled stone had a rustic, textured finish, but the small size and large application created an utterly calming and modern feel. Not one to shy away from taking pictures in the loo, I refused to leave without a few snaps.

Not bad for a public restroom, not bad at all. And did it inspire me to buy a couch? Of course!
