An artful stain

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 11:55AM Last week our office was lucky enough to have a visit from jewelry, make-up, and henna artist Tiffany Thomas. Not only is she a delight to have around, she thrilled all of us by offering up her steady hand and well-honed skills to create personal, one-of-a-kind temporary tattoos.
Henna is a plant which has been cultivated for thousands of years for the unique dyeing power of its crushed leaves. Greenish-brown paste is made from the leaves and a mix of wet ingredients; when applied to hair or skin it deposits a reddish-brown stain. Henna painting has long been used to decorate the hands and faces of women in traditional Indian weddings; in recent years Tiffany has applied intricate designs to the hands and bodies of women at everything from a baby shower to a bachelorette party to a Sweet 16.
Another type of natural dye is made from the juice of the tropical Jagua fruit. This dye is less viscous and much darker; the resulting stain is blackish-blue much like a real tattoo. Tiffany told us that jagua is more popular with men who prefer the darker shade.
Tiffany can be booked for parties big and small; otherwise just check out her work on her website to be seriously wowed.
